The NIFTY 50 is owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited (formerly known as India Index Services & Products Limited-IISL), India’s first specialized company focused on an index as a core product.
NIFTY 50 is an index consisting of India’s top 50 large-cap companies that are leaders in their respective sectors. So, only some of the biggest and most reputed companies in India become a part of this index.
The top 50 large-cap companies are selected based on their free-float market cap a bit later in this blog. But for now, let’s keep it simple that the NIFTY 50 index is a basket of the top 50 large-cap companies in India. And the index is used as a hypothetical portfolio that can reflect the overall movement in the Indian stock market.The NIFTY 50 is a benchmark Indian stock market index that represents the weighted average of 50 of the largest Indian companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. It is one of the two main stock indices used in India, the other being the BSE SENSEX.
